Rainwater Harvesting

Standing water in the yard

Due to lack of a proper water management system, rainwater harvesting has never been done before in Pakistan.

I live in a water poor country, and in my past i had to wake up early in the morning and get in line to fill up bottles of clean drinking water, so i know the pain of not having a bottomless tank filled with clean water at home.

The water reserves have been steadily decreasing in Pakistan and the population has been rising exponentially it would be safe to say that Pakistan would run out of clean natural water reserves in the near future.

Pakistan is third world country so sometimes you have got to take matters into your own hands.

In past month Karachi, the city i have lived in for my whole life, had one of the most torrential monsoon rainfalls. There was water flowing everywhere, the sewage system was unable to handle the excess rainwater so the gutters started to overflow, the roads were filled with water. In some of the areas water started to enter the houses and cars parked on flooded streets started to flow with the water, which caused millions of rupees of damage. Most of us got lucky but in the areas where there was poor construction of buildings, houses fell down and a lot of people died.

Flooded Roads

The government has never taken this problem of urban flooding seriously, Karachi experiences two rainy season in the year and both of these seasons are over in a few weeks but the damage they do to city are irrecoverable.

There have been so many examples of countries like Singapore, Japan and Australia to name a few.

We should take a look at how these countries manage their limited resources.

I will be looking for a sustainable solution to the problem being experienced by the people of Pakistan wish me luck!
